The Employment Rights Bill: What Employers Need to Know
The proposed Employment Rights Bill could bring the biggest shake-up in UK employment law in decades — and it's something every employer should be aware of. Key Changes at a Glance:
Day-One Rights: Employees would gain the right to unfair dismissal protection, parental leave, and flexible working from their first day.
Zero-Hour Contracts Banned: Workers would be entitled to a contract that reflects their regular hours.
End to Fire-and-Rehire: Employers could no longer dismiss staff to rehire them on worse terms.
Greater Union Access: Unions would gain more power to organise and access workplaces.
New Fair Work Agency: A single enforcement body would crack down on unpaid wages, discrimination, and unsafe conditions.
Harassment Protections: Employers would be legally required to prevent harassment, including from third parties.
What this means for you:
If passed, the bill will require most businesses to update contracts, policies, and manager training and fast. Labour has pledged to introduce the changes within 100 days if elected, so now is the time to prepare.
